Professor Brendan J Griffin

BSc(Hons), PhD

Expertise

Characterisation of materials and structures at the nanometre scale by high resolution and variable pressure scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis. Development of self-assembled platinum nanoparticle arrays as SEM imaging resolution standards. Forensic microscopies of trace evidence and nanoscale marker materials. A broad knowledge of light, laser, ion and electron microscopy techniques and extensive international network in these areas.

Contribution to the Centre

Collaboration with Centre colleagues to develop the new nano-materials and nano-structures by establishing new SEM and other imaging protocols suitable for this scale of characterisation. Postgraduate student co-supervision in characterisation and analysis aspects. Assisting in fostering links within the University sector including interstate and overseas, and with Government, CSIRO and industry, and coordinating outreach programs. Developing forensic applications for nanomaterials.

Current Projects in the Centre

  • Forensic tracer nano-particles (with Pui Shan Chan and Ian Dadour)
  • Carbon nanotube characterisation (with Lee Hubble, Colin Raston and Eddy Poinen)

Relevant ARC Networks

  • PI for the ARC Australian Nanotechnology Network.

Member of Editorial Boards

  • J. Microscopy and Microanalysis

Postgraduates working on core projects in the Centre

  • Pui Shan Chan (with Ian Dadour)
